Beverley's Cobberdog Kitchen
I was taught lots of years ago, that dogs are carnivores, meaning that they are solely meat eaters. Herbivores feed exclusively on plant material and an omnivore can feed on both plant and animal sources. One of the trails I took my dogs for walks on, had blackberries growing wild and scattered in amongst the forest shrubbery. The trail was off the beaten track and I knew that there was no spraying of poisons to kill off the blackberry so when I noticed the dogs delicately avoiding the thorns in order to pick and eat the blackberries, it got me thinking. They were well fed, definitely not hungry, and in the season, they devoured the wild fruit whenever we went walking on that trail. I decided to research and experiment. I learned that when dogs in the wild catch a bunny or other grass or plant eating animal, the first part they feast on is the stomach contents. The grasses and herbs inside the stomach are warm and partly digested and are extremely nutritious. I also learned that dogs can't process the nutrients in plants unless they're crushed or cooked.
The next part of their prey that they eat, is the organ meat, things like kidneys, liver, and heart and the connecting tissues and fine bones. After they've satisfied their hunger with the most beneficial parts, finally, they consume the muscle meat which is the least nutritious of all. The recipes that I want to share with you, mimic the way that dogs instinctively access critical nutrients from their food when they are given the opportunity. Your beloved best friend will reward your efforts with shining eyes, wagging tail and robust health into old age.
