Rutlands Australian Cobberdogs DNA Health Screening Archives
When I decided to develop a new dog breed, my dedicated goal was to breed the healthiest dogs on the planet. Nothing has changed! In the early period of Cobberdog breed development prior to health testing as we know it today, it was basically a case of 'try it and see' and as a few tests became available I had them done. In the early days, hip and elbow testing was all that was available prior to the advent later on of DNA testing for dogs, with the first DNA test (from memory) being for PRA-PRCD (an inheritable disease of the eye)
- Dogs suspected of passing on health issues have been removed from Rutlands breeding program, de-sexed and given to pet homes prepared to manage any possible health problems.
- Individuals "clear by parentage" of specific hereditary diseases do not need to be tested for autosomal recessive diseases because they can not pass on those diseases when bred to a clear mate. The following males and females are a random selection from the archives.
