Way back when, someone thought that 'Doodle' would be a cute shortened name to call a Labradoodle. A Labradoodle is a cross breed mix between a Labrador and a Poodle and it can never be anything other than that.
The 'Doodle' name caught on fast; in fact it caught on so fast that before long, anything and everything that was mated to a Poodle was also called a 'Doodle' by the uninitiated, to cash in on the Designer Dogs' popularity.
Trouble was, that the die-hards still persisted in calling their Labradoodles 'Doodles', and eventually even the Australian Labradoodles which were originally developed way past the initial cross breed using some carefully selected pure breed infusions were, and still are, referred to by some fanciers and even breeders, as 'Doodles'.
I think that the beautiful 'Golden Doodle' (derived from crossing a Golden Retriever with a Poodle) really needs a different name too. Especially since they are not necessarily golden. In some circles they are called 'Groodles' which is a tad better.
But here's where it gets so funny that I can not help giggling every time I hear the word 'Doodle' being used to describe a dog !
In Australia, when someone uses the word 'doodle' it is an urban slang term referring to a penis! Oh my golly, I just crack up laughing when I see kennel prefixes called 'Doodle' this and 'Doodle' that. It's hilarious, and even just a teensy weensy bit embarrassing!
