Are You Confused about Labradoodles and Australian Labradoodles?

This page describes the way it was until steps were taken to remove all the confusion.  On 1st January 2012 The (authentic) Australian Labradoodle changed its name to

THE AUSTRALIAN COBBERDOG

Are You Confused?  What is a Labradoodle, an F1, F1b, Multi Generation? What is the difference between a Labradoodle and an Australian Labradoodle? These questions answered from the source - the co founder of the Australian Labradoodle Beverley Manners.

Labradoodle
The Labradoodle was first invented by Wally Conran of the Royal Melbourne Guide Dog Centre in Kew Melbourne Australia and was a cross between a Labrador Retriever and a Standard Poodle.  No other breeds were infused into this cross, which subsequently remained a crossbred hybrid dog which didn't breed true and which varied in appearance, temperament and nature. Most of their coats shed and were not allergy friendly.

There are many breeders across the world who continue to breed this cross, which is known as the F1 Labradoodle (first generation).
F1b Labradoodle
Because of the unreliability of their puppies, especially in the qualities of coat, some breeders decided to breed their first generation (F1) Labradoodles back to Poodles in the hope that more consistency of coat might be produced and less shedding.  The name F1b stands appropriately for 'breeding backwards'.  However the dogs produced, although they may have shed less and gained some improved likeness to one another, they are predominantly Poodle, with no distinct personality or traits of their own.
Multi Gen or Multi Generational Labradoodle
Breeders who use this term are basically saying that they have back bred to the Poodle, and then mixed and matched the resulting progeny in an effort to convince others that their dogs were superior to the original F1b cross bred.  There is some kind of 'badge honour' perceived in being able to say that they have moved beyond the first generation cross, regardless of how they may have done so.
Breeders who claim to have 'Multi Gens' are usually involved in some complicated 'upgrading scheme' brought in by Labradoodle Registries who have broken away from the authentic breed created and developed by the two founders of the Australian Labradoodle, Tegan Park and Rutland Manor breeding and research centres in Australia.
Australian Labradoodle
The Australian Labradoodle has a unique, traceable DNA signature through four carefully selected pure breed infusions at pre determined times and for specific reasons, over two decades of selective breeding, and has been developed as a breed in its own right.  The Australian Labradoodle breeds true and its hallmarks are a highly developed intuitive nature, a love of training, and a yearning for human eye contact.  It has a 99% plus record for allergy friendliness and is reliably sociable and non aggressive.

Originally, the founders of the breed called their dogs 'Labradoodles' but so many copies were bred they changed the name to the 'Australian Labradoodle'.  Within a few weeks of announcing the change, the ILA,LAA and ALCA also changed the name of the results from their upgrading schemes to 'Australian Labradoodle' as well.  *

Some of these Registries still mis-name their mix and match Labradoodles, AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLES whilst allowing cross breed Cockapoos and more Poodles to be added to the mix.  They also do not recognize and refuse to register any dog carrying Rutland Manor's final infusion which completes the breed 'Australian Labradoodle'.  Information about the final infusion can be found on the following website
IN A NUTSHELL
The Labradoodle, and later Australian Labradoodle, had such a meteroric rise to popularity that rather than breed from an already stable foundation, according to the founders' program, people formed their own alliances, and created registries that gave them public credibility but which also allowed them to make any rules that suited them.  But their rules did away with the founders' actual breed development program.  With the blind leading the blind, confusion reigns and the integrity of the breed is fast disappearing in the hands of people who openly admit they have deviated from the vision of the breed founders.
