This important topic deserves its own section on the website because there is so much ground breaking research being done into the health of dogs and so much new information available ongoing.
Our western culture tends to accept disease, especially in senior years as being inevitable, and either hereditary and therefore unavoidable, or unpreventable in other ways. Unfortunately some veterinarians also hold the same view and can be more interested in treating disease than in preventing it from occurring in the first place.
I am not a trained medical professional nor am I a scientist, but I have spent over 50 years researching the work of others more qualified than myself, and alongside my research, I have observed and documented my findings. When not studying, my 'laboratory' has been in the field, with my credentials being a breeder of top quality dogs, persian cats, stud cattle, horses, sheep and goats-boarding kennel operator with the welfare of up to 800 dogs and 120 cats at any one time my responsibility, a professional animal behaviorist, and professional dog trainer.
Another name for anecdotal research is 'experience'. I've realised the need to step outside the box with an open mind and to not blindly cling to traditional values which may have become outdated in our modern world.
When I was a girl, it was a rare occurrence for a dog to be taken to the vet for anything other than treatment after an accident, or for vaccination. Dogs just didn't often get sick! It was unheard of, for a dog to have cancer, kidney dysfunction, liver failure, diabetes, or allergies - all of which have reached pandemic proportions. Dogs routinely lived to 18 and even 20 years and then one day, were found passed away where they had curled up to sleep. Something has to have changed!
One of the advantages of getting older is that one has had the opportunity to witness cycles that come and go, and to see the results of trends that have taken years to develop. During the sixties I worked for the chain of three Elva Raper Boarding Kennels in Melbourne Australia. I lived on site at her Burwood Rd Wantirna kennels in Melbourne and later on, lived on and managed her Braeside kennels when she purchased them from internationally renowned all breeds judge, Mr Cam Milward, breeder of the famous Grenpark Fox Terriers.
In busy holiday periods, the combined population of 800 boarding dogs and 120 cats gave me first hand experience with the health and condition of many pure breed and cross breed dogs and cats. The first commercially processed dry food I remember was Harpers Dog Chow which I was asked to trial. But that's a whole other story.
Can Diet Affect the Immune System? We knew it long ago! But what have we done about it?
Excerpt from Article : Nutrition Health Review Article date: June 22, 1990
"The past few years have brought to the surface a realization that food might have considerable effect upon fortifying the body against disease. Once relegated to "pipe dreams" of food faddists, the scientific community is beginning to embrace such concepts of nutrition with fervor.
The most common disease in Animals is AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE.
Anemia, seizures , arthritis & many more are all autoimmune diseases

WHERE DID IT AL BEGIN?
Interestingly, it was only a few years after the explosion of 'convenience' foods and highly processed packaged foods laden with preservatives and carcinogenic food dies and chemicals, that human health began its steep decline to the current condition, which continues to worsen. I remember a headline in a major newspaper years ago which announced "RECENT RESEARCH LINKS DIET TO HEALTH"
The same steep decline in canine health also began with the introduction of highly processed dog food and mandatory annual vaccinations - which Pfizer and others admit, have an efficacy of at very least three years. It is not necessarily the vaccines themselves which pose the danger It is the number of extenders and preservative in them which are known, proven carcinogens. ( cancer causing substances).
ARE TOO MANY AND TOO FREQUENT VACCINES REALLY KILLING OUR DOGS?
I should preface this article by saying that I DO believe in vets administering vaccines to dogs. What I do NOT believe in, is vaccinating every 12 months, with vaccinations that have at least a 36 month efficacy period by the vaccine makers' own admissions - along with the known carcinogens contained in the vaccines - especially when a titre test (blood test) gives an accurate reading of the levels of vaccine still active in the dog's body, and nesodes are a scientifically proven healthy alternative to currently legislated vaccines.
Broadly speaking, and in its simplest terms, evolution is merely 'change over time' (not to be confused with Darwin's theory of evolution' in respect to the 'theory of Evolution' v 'Creation'). It is the more specific biological evolution that we are concerned with here and also Adaptation evolution. Biological evolution refers to the changes over time that occur in living organisms. Biological evolution is defined as 'descent with modification' and Adaptation evolution as the name suggests, refers to the way living organisms (or creatures) adapt over time to the changes in their own environment. These adaptations can of course be either positive or negative, in line with other universal laws of nature.
All dogs are descended from the Wolf. The DNA of the modern dog is only 2% different to the Wolf.
An illustration of Biological evolution is the overall changes in the appearance of the canis species by way of the hundreds of man - made dog breeds in the world today. Although humanly engineered, the process of evolution has been clearly demonstrated by the way in which each breed - over time - now has its own specific and consistent appearance. It would be naive to suggest that these modifications would be confined to physical appearance. Genetic physiological and behavioural traits have also been modified - over time - as well.
A perfect example is the beautiful Border Collie, once known for its inherent and instinctive prowess in herding sheep. Its magnetic "eye" and wisdom were legendary. But over time the breed gained such popularity as a show dog in the conformation ring, that a perfect coat and markings took precedence over working ability as breeders rushed for the coveted Champion title. The breed parted into two distinct strains - one as a working dog to herd sheep, and the other as a beauty to admire at a trot around a small show ring. With few exceptions, today's Show Border Collie wouldn't know what to do with a mob of sheep.
Because their inborn talent lay dormant for so long, the genes that produced it simply got washed out by the proliferation of genetic material selectively bred for in the show ring.
We already know
We already know that what I have described above is called 'inheritance' and that living creatures have a predisposition to pass on to their offspring specific traits when combined with the genes of their breeding partners. I am calling this 'biological inheritance'. What this article sets out to do, is to widen the concept of inheritance to include the effects of the external environment around our dogs and to consider the possibility that - again over time - externally induced disease may well become fixed in the genes and transmit themselves to biological inheritance. I call this phenomonyn 'Genetic Acclimatization'.
This has already been done with crops, to create strains which are resistant to disease such as rust. Although I am not a proponent of genetic engineering, I use this example as an illustration only.
Something to Consider
My theory is that illness, caused either by direct hereditary influences, OR by other external environmental factors, may become a generational thing with the appropriate circumstances. Could it be that when several generations have passed, during which disease has been caused by external factors, these diseases may become part of the genetic make up? If the answer is 'yes', then we have the power to exert an influence for good on future dog generations, by removing as many negative environmental influences as possible from around our breeding dogs. These could include choosing natural alternatives to supplement legally required vet treatments, reducing or eliminating chemical - laden air sprays, disinfectants, weed killers, garden sprays, plastic wrapped dog food or treats, chemically impregnated carpet and dog beds, and flea collars just to name a few.
Dr Jean Dodds DVM, highly respected world leader on canine health, has this to say in her article below:
Unnecessary annual vaccinations are killing our dogs!
Why are we mindlessly over - vaccinating our dogs year after year, generation after generation, when there is so much scientific evidence to show how dangerous it is and how many dogs it is making ill or even killing?
You will find many more informed and authoritative information on the internet, including articles by Dr Jean Dodds accepted world authority on conditions of the Auto Immune System.
Vaccination Laws Need to be Changed. We should be pressing for titer tests to be legal verification of sufficient antibodies being present in our pets before being forced by law to over vaccinate them.
If dog owners will stand together with one voice and insist on titer tests in place of repetitive vaccinations things will change. It makes so much sense. A titer test (blood test) determines whether or not the original vaccine still has the required level of antibodies in the dog's system, to protect the dog from infectious disease/s. It makes NO sense to continue pumping the dog's system full of poisons when the active levels of vaccine are still adequately high for full protection.
BACK TO BACK BREEDING OF BITCHES - (on successive heat cycles)
Laws Regulating Frequency of Breeding are Harming our Dogs!
Dogs are unique from other animal species in several ways. When they mate, the female's body remains joined to the male for varying periods from a few minutes up to about 3/4 of an hour. This joining is referred to by breeders, as a "tie" and if the male mates the female without a tie, this is referred to as a "slip mating". Slip matings can produce puppies, but they are not normally productive. If the pair are seen mating as in the picture below, and the male steps off right away and they are not "stuck" together then the two are not joined and it has not been a tie. This is one example of unique differences in the dog when compared to other animals.
WHY IT IS NOT HEALTHY FOR FEMALE DOGS TO SKIP A HEAT CYCLE
Another unique difference between canines and other species, is also connected to reproduction. After a heat cycle, the female dog steps up her hormone production to line the walls of her uterus in preparation for the litter that Nature expects her to grow inside of her womb. One of these hormones is oestrogen. An over abundance of oestrogen, produces an acidic environment which is perfect for cancer to develop and to thrive. The difference between the female dog and other female animals, is that their bodies do not recognize whether they have been mated or not. It's the heat cycle itself which signals to the bitch to release the oestrogen that courses through the body to prepare it for conception and parturition. So when the oestrogen is not used by growing puppies, and milk production, it provides the ideal environment for killer cancers and pyometras of the womb to develop.
It is my personal opinion that it is in the best health interests of young healthy adult female breeding dogs, to mate them on successive heats and spay them younger than is currently done so that they still have years to live out their lives as cherished companions.
QUESTION: WHO decided and WHY that it's harmful to breed a bitch on successive cycles? Or that it's cruel for female dogs to have babies?
ANSWER: Animal Liberation Extreme Activist Groups. By focusing on bad or immoral breeders, emotional responses are stirred in the general public domain, which gains support for the relentless agendas of the extremist activists.
We should not confuse Animal Welfare with Animal Liberation. Did you know that Animal LIBERATION groups have an admitted agenda to terminate human beings' right to own pets at all?
QUESTION: WHO Decided to manipulate Public Opinion into believing that skipping heat cycles is "resting" the female?
ANSWER:: Animal Liberationist Extremists who by their own admission, have the ultimate goal of pushing legislation which prohibits the keeping or breeding of any domestic or companion animal as a pet - including service animals.
