How Puppies are raised at Rutland Manor Labradoodle Breeding and Research Centre in Australia
There are as many different ways to raise a puppy as you could point a stick at! But I do admit to being unashamedly pedantic about the way Rutland Manor puppies are raised.

Rutland Manor puppies are cognitively stimulated and pre conditioned from neo natal when their mothers listen to soothing Baroque, to the time they leave us. Their cognitive and physical development are monitored throughout several carefully orchestrated phases which prepare them for their journeys to their forever families and beyond. |
The Phases for the Baby Puppies at Rutland Manor
First Phase: The baby puppies are born into the palm of my hand and are handled individually several times daily, being massaged and stroked as part of early cognitive stimulation exercises. They have their own temperature controlled nursery and their own TV and CD player, both of which are utilised to introduce the babies to new sights and sounds as soon as their eyes and ears open at around two weeks of age.
Second Phase: Paper training commences at around three weeks of age. The far side of their bed is soft blanketing which is changed daily, and the front half near the exit from their bed is spread with fresh newspapers each day. Puppies this age spend most of their time sleeping, and when the little tots wake up and start to waddle about, their first instinct is to go potty. Their first few steps take them onto the paper, and thus "clean" habits are instilled from this early age.
Third Phase::At around four weeks of age, the puppies are ready to explore. Until they are vaccinated for the first time, at six weeks of age, they must be kept on meticulously clean concrete when they are outside. The barrier which has allowed their mother to come and go as she pleases is removed from the doorway so that the puppies can run in and out of their bedroom to play with their toys.
Solid foods are introduced gradually now, with weaning completed at eight weeks of age. Some of the foods the puppies have daily, include fresh raw minced beef or lamb, grated cheese, raw eggs, natural non sweetened non flavoured yogurt, fresh raw chicken necks for chewing, fresh raw meaty bones for chewing, lactose-free milk (does not cause diarrahea and they LOVE it) and fresh leafy greens blended and mixed through their minced meat meals. A small amount of kibble is available to the puppies only because we know that some of their new families will use it and the puppies need to know that this 'stuff' is 'food'.
When vaccinations are effective the puppies' area is extended so that they can run free to play together in the grassy adventure playground beyond their nursery.
Fifth Phase and Beyond: Crate training, then Crate training with scary sounds, walks out in the open paddocks, and drives around the farm to meet the other animals. Every opportunity is taken to allow the puppies to play with the kid-proofing team, and to make friends with new people after their vaccinations are in effect.
Rutland Manor puppies are wormed at two weeks of age and each two weeks until leaving. They are microchipped and get their first vaccination at six weeks old, and if not for breeding, are desexed between seven and eight weeks.

Early Cognitive Response Stimulation and Puppy Socialization
“ Puppy Socialization” is a term most people are familiar with. But fifty plus years of practical dog breeding and twenty plus years of study and anecdotal research have taught me that puppies, just like human babies can have some deeper psychological needs met while they are in uterus and during the neo natal stage (four weeks following birth) , that can have a profound influence on their adult lives.
Independent research has found a link between the onset of canine dementia. (which is increasing in many kinds of dogs) and the lack of appropriate cognitive stimulation in very young puppies.
Traditionally, after weaning, what is popularly known as ‘socialization’ then begins. But Rutland Manor puppies begin their spiritual journey long before this, starting with my long established and proven pre-birth methods and then progressing through a precisely orchestrated sequence of initiated experiences that fully prepare them emotionally and psychologically for well adjusted adult lives.
It’s so rewarding to have seen the fruits of my labors stand the test of time. And now when you hear people saying that Rutland Manor puppies are ‘different’ because they are so remarkably easy to train and have such an intuitive connection to human beings, you will know the reasons why !
Of course, you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear as the saying goes, so without good breeding behind them, no amount of pre-conditioning would bring about the same results. But early cognitive response stimulation together with good breeding is an unbeatable combination, and the reason why when you read the feedback from families receiving their Rutland Manor puppy, the positive comments are all the same as if written to a script!

As soon as puppies have been vaccinated they are safe to spend lots of time outside, romping around together on the lawns, being introduced to 'the tunnel' the Adventure Playground, and meeting other animals on the farm. The puppies who stay with us longer, while they wait to be old enough to be admitted into some European countries, are leash walked daily, and taught to come and to sit. All the puppies learn to enjoy being groomed regularly.

The Video Clip below shows puppies being crate trained, as a part of their pre- travel preparation - with their scary sounds CD playing to accustom them to loud bangs, thunder crashes, fireworks and other scary sounds. The puppies are completely unperturbed. Yet if this exercise were performed in the wrong window of opportunity, it could have an opposite effect to the one desired.
