Australian Labradoodle Breed Standard

The Australian Labradoodle (not to be confused with the Labradoodle) as a developing breed has required Breed Standard revision as it progressed through the various stages of its evolving development. Research on the results of the infusions of four pure breeds past the two parent breeds was completed in 2010. The Australian Labradoodle is breeding true to type and in 2011 was four generations past the final infusion or back breeding. |
BREED STANDARD For The Australian Labradoodle
GENERAL APPEARANCE
A moderately compact dog, balanced and graceful, with joyful and friendly bearing and an intelligent expression. Immediately impresses with its light footed athleticism and friendly temperament and intuitive nature which are an integral part of the dog’s purpose and should be immediately apparent
SIZE PROPORTION AND SUBSTANCE
Overall balance and lack of exaggeration are more important than absolute size. Slightly longer than tall, on a ratio as ten is to twelve.
STANDARD size from 19 inches and up to 25 inches with dogs slightly larger than bitches MINIATURE size from 16 TO 18 INCHES with dogs slightly larger than bitches.
Should not carry too much weight, but should have a firm covering of flesh with backbone and pin bones not able to be felt beneath the coat.
TEMPERAMENT
Confident, Lively, friendly and fun loving. Human oriented, he should seek human eye contact and show obvious pleasure in his work. Timidity, reserve of strangers, shyness and aggression are all disqualifying faults.
HEAD
Moderately broad skull with sculptured occiput. Skull never domed. Slightly longer from occiput to nose than from occiput to top of skull. Muzzle broad with firmly fitting lips and flews. The nose is a definite feature being large and fleshy, never small, pinched, narrow or pointed.
FACE
Expression is sweet and gentle but lively, never dull nor downcast. Should seek human eye contact with an engaging expression which is lively, curious, fun loving and wise.
EYES
Oval or round and set wide apart, the eyes are a feature of the breed with an obvious desire to connect with humans. Eyes larger than small, but must not protrude. Nor should they be sunken. Drooping lids or prominent haws are a serious fault. Eyes are draped with long sweeping eyelashes that serve as a platform to help keep hair out of the eyes.
Eye colour should match the pigment of the dog , with hazel to brown eyes for liver pigmented Chocolates, Cafes and Caramels, and dark brown eyes for black pigmented Blacks and Creams.
Blue eyes or odd eyes of two different colors are a disqualification. A sharp, piercing or expressionless eye is a serious fault
EARS
Pendulous, and set wide apart on the sides of the head, slightly below the plane of the skull and with a slight lift at the base for air flow. Well furnished with the tip of the ear leather not extending beyond the nose. Furnishings are considerably longer.
BITE
Scissor bite preferred but a level bite may be tolerated in an otherwise excellent individual. Teeth and Gums strong and healthy. Overshot, undershot, wry bite or crowded mouth are disqualifications.
BODY NECK AND TOP LINE
Exaggerations highly undesirable. Neck slightly arched, moderately long, powerful and muscular sweeping gracefully into the top line which is level with only a slight drop behind the withers and a moderate slope over the loins to the low set tail. Body well proportioned, Chest moderately deep but not excessively so. Tail Set low from the slightly sloping croup and carried in a saber shape. Tail may be carried gaily when excited with the tip above the topline. Twisted, kinked, possum or teapot tails are a fault.
FOREQUARTERS
Shoulders should be muscular and well developed, but never loaded or ponderous. Humorous and scapular blades relatively long, broad and moderately angulated. Elbows should turn neither in nor out and sit snugly in front of the ribs. Forelegs are well-boned and set straight to the ground with strong moderately short pasterns. Excessively short front limbs run the dog downhill and put strain on joints and tendons and are to be penalized.
HINDQUARTERS
Powerful, with seemingly effortless drive. Broad well muscled thighs. Moderately angulated with stifle to hock being longer than hock to the ground.
FEET
Strong and compact with well-arched toes, round or oval in shape. Short nails and thick pads. The breed is born without hind dewclaws and front dewclaws may be removed. Hare feet a serious fault.
COAT– Single coat with Two Varieties, Wool and Fleece
The coat is a distinct feature and is given high priority after conformation and temperament..
Must not shed when tugged, nor have doggy Odor.
WOOL COAT
Similar in texture and appearance to the Poodle, and are presented clipped the same overall length on body and legs. Feet are presented clipped clean but not to the ankles. Tails are presented fully furnished and flowing. Muzzles and faces must not be clipped but may be tidied with the scissors.
FLEECE COAT
Wavy to slightly curly and the same overall length on body and legs. Presented long and flowing, with face scissor trimmed to show the eyes. Feet are clipped clean but only to the heel height and are covered by the overhang of the furnishings on the legs. Must not be presented clipped to the ankles like a Poodle. Tail is presented long and free flowing.
Bleaching of the coat tips caused by 'weathering' from sun wind and rain must not be penalized.
MOVEMENT
A trotting breed, at the trot, should appear to float effortlessly above the ground. Light, lithe graceful and athletic giving the impression of ‘joyfully going somewhere’.
When viewed from the front or rear, the legs turn neither in or out.
With increased speed, footfall converges toward the centre line of gravity. When viewed from the side, the front legs should reach out smoothly to full extension with no prancing nor high stepping. The hind feet should reach well forward beneath the body, with the short strong hocks flexing well. Ambling or pacing is a serious fault.
COLOURS
Whole colors in Black, Silver, shades of Cream Caramel or Apricot, Red , Chocolate, Cafe au Lait, Parchment, Blue, and Lavender .
Parti colors are acceptable but not preferred. Parti Colours come in combinations of the whole colours with white or cream
SUMMARY OF FAULTS: Two testicles not fully descended in males at six months and older and any deviation from the Breed Standard.
