My name is Beverley Rutland-Manners, a name which has been synonomous with integrity and honour in the 'dog and horse world' for the past fifty years, and internationally respected since approximately 1998. That is, until in 2009, when a small (known) group of people with their own agendas, initiated an internet and email smear campaign which may give some folk cause to wonder - that is if they haven't known me, nor benefited from bringing a puppy I have bred, or one of my retired breeding dogs into their own lives.
Over the years, many abused dogs and horses have found their way into my life, where they have been rehabilitated and passed on to kindly homes to live well adjusted happy lives. This has always been a labour of love, at my own personal expense, and with no public fanfare. The amazing and wonderful reward is knowing that one of God's creatures has been given a second chance to live a well adjusted and happy life and that I have been so privileged to have played a small part.
THEN A CAR ACCIDENT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER.
In my twenties I broke my neck in an accident caused by a drunk driver. I was blessed that I walked again but I didn't ride horses after that for the next 25 years. It was during this time that I became acutely interested in dogs as Assistance Dogs for the disabled.
The hunger to ride again wouldn't leave me and finally my doctor and chiropractor against their better judgement, and amidst dire warnings of what would probably happen if I fell off the horse, taught me better ways to sit the horse and the precautions I should take. Instead of returning to my first love of Dressage, I entered the world of the Quarter Horse and the more relaxed style of riding it provided. My God Given gift of communicating with animals came to my aid, and I learned the art of riding with my mind, in tune with the horse, rather than "mastering" it. I rode my Quarterhorse gelding Yulgilbar Pablo,at Pony Clubs and Expos without a bridle, to demonstrate the bond of co operation and mutual understanding that is possible between horse and human, and to encourage others with disabilities to ride again. TV Channel 7 in Melbourne heard of me because of the book I had written, and featured our story. Pablo was also billed as 'Pablo The Wonder Horse' at the Channel 7 Expo held at Caulfield Racecourse in Melbourne in the year 1993.
The Equicizer
As I've grown older, some problems in the aftermath of the accident have raised their heads as can be expected, and I thank Frank Lovato for my 'Mate' the Therapeutic Equicizer, which has enabled me to keep riding much longer than would have been possible without this wonderful invention.
I believe that we do not 'own' animals, we are merely the stewards of God's creatures. I have been an advocate for animal rights for most of my adult life. Long before the advent of the internet, in my own small way, I reached out to needy animals the only way I knew how, one hoof and one paw at a time. When I was a teenager, the restrictive laws to protect dogs were not in place, at least not in Australia, where it was a common sight to see dogs of all descriptions wandering unaccompanied about the streets. Thankfully, It's quite a different matter these days!
The buzz breed of the times, was the Old English Sheep Dog, they were everywhere! Once those cute fluffy puppies grew up, their massive coats were often neglected by their families more through ignorance than cruelty or non caring. When I saw saw a dirty, matted OESD wandering, I'd entice it into my car, take it home and spend hours de-matting its coat or clipping it off if it was too bad to save. A shampoo and flea rince later, I'd return it to the place I found it, nice and clean and comfortable again.I often wished I could see the looks on the faces of their owners, when they saw their dog all cleaned up, but of course I never did get to enjoy that experience.
My life has always revolved around animals, in particular dogs and horses. At an early age I realized that God had blessed me with a special gift, the ability to read an animal's mind and thoughts and to communcate with them in a way they understand. They instinctively trust me and as a child I helped my school friends to train their dogs. I have rescued and rehabilitated abused horses, often keeping them for months until they were well adjusted and trusting of humans again. Some I sold on to good people, and others I gave away, but I believe that they came into my life for a reason.
The Wonderment of New Life
The miracle of new life has always inspired me as has the fascination of studying bloodlines and working to improve and strengthen lines of the animals I have bred.
Over the years I have bred Stud Angus cattle, Dorper and Wiltshire sheep, Angora goats, dogs and Quarter Horses.
Some beautiful moments I was fortunate enough to capture on my camera as a mare gives birth to, and greets her first born foal.
