Interesting allergy report!
Sun Nov 23 12:27:36 2003
Hi Guys,
I met a first-gen labradoodle
yesterday and spent a few
minutes playing with him. I got
itchy hands and stinging eyes
within about 10 minutes. He has
a wavy non-shedding poodle wool
feeling coat. My own
multi-gen labradoodle causes me
absolutely no reaction unless I
groom him for a long, long time.
I can play with him and hug him
and sleep with him and no
reaction. Interesting to prove
to myself that shedding does not
relate to allergic reaction!
I
am so glad that I got a multi-gen
because I would have been
heartbroken to part with my pup.

Good advice, Karen!

Karen, thanks for posting about
your allergy reaction with the
first generation labradoodle.
Since we're considering a
doodle, we need to know all the
facts, and just knowing your
multi-generation dood didn't
cause your allergies to react
but the F1 did, gives us
hope!!!! Thanks again for
posting! I love reading about
everyone's doods/advice and
experiences!

good (mostly) allergy story
Mon Dec 8 15:22:57 2003
We have never had a pet
(married 23 years) because of my
husband's allergies. So far no
symptoms with Bear, which is
wonderful!
Bear started his first puppy
training class on Saturday, two
days ago. It wasn't until we got
there that we realized my
husband might not be able to
tolerate the class due to the
other dogs! It wasn't bad until
toward the end of the hour, when
his eyes started watering. No
trouble breathing, thank
goodness. He wiped one eye with
his hand. By the time we got
home both eyes were watering so
badly that he could hardly see,
and the one he wiped with his
hand was bright red! He ended up
not going anywhere all day
because he couldn't see well. By
nightfall he was back to normal,
but it really reinforced that we
made the right choice getting
the Labradoodle!

Puppy Class Precautions
Mon Dec 8 18:00:07 2003
I have the same thing
happen everytime we go to the
dog classes or Vet. I keep a
package of baby wipes, the
travel pak, in the glove
compartment and wipe my hands
after every class or visit. Also
the Albuturol spray is on the
dashboard.
Don't touch your eyes, no matter
how much they bother you, and I
have left class early, on
several occasions.
And, of course, I thank God and
Beverley for the lovely Doodle
baby that we have that doesn't
bother my allegies a bit.
Give Bear a couple extra cuddles
from us.

My husband has terrible dog
allergies. All he normally has
to do is walk into some ones
house with a dog and he gets
tight in the chest, breaks out
in hives, nose runs eyes water.
And he does not even have to
touch the dog.
We got Marley a year ago after
testing his allergies on Sandys
dog Tillie. The first week we
had Marley seem to bother him
somewhat, but after that he has
done great. Marley is a wool
coat and plays with Tom a lot no
allergy problems. On a very rare
occasion Tom has a reaction, but
he says he is not sure if Marley
was out playing in the grass or
is it because the pollen or mold
count is high. But no hives or
tight chest ever and Marley is
always inside. If Marley licks
him a lot he sometimes feels
itchy, but rarely. All in all
the labradoodle has been a
wonderful dog for my allergy
suffering husband. Good Luck

For Katie Grace's Dad
Sun Oct 19 17:34:50 2003
Hi Tom,
It has been such fun reading
Katie Grace's postings. Isn't it
wonderful that she has found a
dog for you. Just to let you
know my husband is terribly
allergic to dogs and cats.
Sneezing, runny eyes etc. We
have a Fleece Labradoodle from
RM and lo and behold, Bill has
NO reaction whatsoever.Thank
goodness!!!!
At the Romp in San Jose in early
September it seemed as if the
Wool coats out numbered the
Fleece coats. There seem to be
lots of them out there. I just
thought that you would like to
know that. I know that Beverley
will certainly have tons more
info for you on that subject
though.
We look forward to hearing when
your Doodle is finally born.
Your life will never be the
same, in a positive way. Who
knows, this may be the first of
many Doodles in your household.
Good luck.

Allergies & asthma info
requested
Tue Aug 12 14:26:00 2003
I'm a prospective labradoodle
owner and hope & pray that what
I'm reading is true! I'd like to
hear from people who have dog
allergies or asthma (allergy
shots included) and if their
Doodles arrival caused any
problems.
We have 2
people in the family
allergic-testing a 2 out of 4,
and my son is taking shots. Two
different allergy docs said they
wouldn't recommend getting a
dog---but, but, but.....we love
dogs and now WE LOVE
LABRADOODLES! We're hoping and
praying for some kind of
miracle! I've read the info from
Rutland Manor (and others) but
would like to hear from people
suffering from the same problems
as our family. Any info received
is helpful.
We hope to attend the North
Carolina romp in Sept. to meet
owners and dogs. Just can't wait
to meet one in person! (Oh! And
the owners too!) :)

Allergies and Labradoodles
Tue Aug 12 22:23:00 2003
Hi Becki,
I'm the one in our family with
allergies. I'm very allergic to
practically every tree, weed,
plant, and mold that grows in
California. I'm also extremely
allergic to cats and moderately
allergic to dogs. I get weekly
allergy shots, and have on and
off for most of my life. My kids
and husband (who don't seem to
be allergic to anything) have
been wanting a dog for a long
time, but I was really
reluctant. I came across
labradoodles just by chance when
I was researching poodles. They
seemed too good to be true. I
went and visited a local doodle
from RM and let him lick me and
really buried my face in his
fur. He didn't bother me at all.
We've had Rosie now since the
end of April and she hasn't
bothered my allergies at all. My
allergist did say that she
should not sleep in my room. She
did sleep in our room for the
first couple of months however,
and how she's moved into our
family room.
Go to a romp if you can and meet
some doodles--that's the best
way to see how you and your
family will react. Good luck.
I'm completely happy with our
Rosie. I hope you and your
family have the same experience
I did.

Allergies
Tue Aug 12 16:54:48 2003
I have 5 out of 5 on my
allegists' charts for dogs,
ragweed, birch trees, maples and
oaks. I get shots (once a week)
but around dogs I still swell up
and get miserable.
Then comes along the RM
Labradoodle. We tested me out at
a friend's house, that has an RM
black male. I played with him
for an hour. NO REACTION!!! I
would normally have been at the
local emergency room getting
Benedryl and using my albuterol.
So we ordered a black male from
RM. He's been here three weeks,
he sleeps on my chest and we
kiss all the time. Skeptics
think it's psyco-somatic but I
know the dog does not cause my
allergies to react.
Go to the Romp and test
yourself. Then get a dog from
Beverley.

our wonderful Lucky
Tue Jan 13 14:02:38 2004
I haven't posted in awhile. Lucky is onr one and 1/2 year old female
mini from RM.. She is the most
wonderful pet a family could ask
for. My wife (Debbie) and I have
2 great children (Jon-11,
Allie-6) who adore her.
The only
real issue was Debbie.
First, she is allergic to most
dogs and cats. Well there
have been no problems in this
regard. Second, Deb
just wasn't a big fan of dogs.
She is "clean house" freak and
quite frankly was never the type
to play with , or even
acknowledge someone else's pet.
So it was with great trepidation
that I made the initial inroad
to Beverley after Debbie
reluctantly gave me the OK. Well
the rest, as they say, is
history.
We have girls club and boys club
depending who Lucky decides to
pay attention to at any given
time. Although we are equally
loved, Debbie gets very special
attention. Lucky will always
attack her with kisses that just
don't stop. The fact that Debbie
lets it happen is to me nothing
short of unbelievable. Lucky
loves to saddle right next to
her (You have all seen it , when
you lay down, your doodle slams
her side and butt into your side
to be as close as she possibly
can).
Debbie will
sometimes pretends to be put-off
but we all know its just an act.
The best is when she doesn't
know I can hear her on the phone
and she is bragging about the
amazing Lu.
A second
labradoodle is more likely than
not. Lucky has spent quite a bit
of time with other dogs and her
happiness quotient multiplies.
It seems impossibe since she is
already "over the moon" as
Beverley once described her.

I have Asthma and I am very
allergic to dogs
Sat Nov 27, 2004 12:42
It takes only minutes at the Vet
ot PetsMart for my breathing to
be affected.
I spent several hours with an RM
Labradoodle BEFORE we ordered
our LabraDoodle from RM to make
sure that It (Muskie) would not
affect me adversely.
I have met over one hundred
Labradoodles since that time and
can say that I have NEVER been
affected by a Labradoodle from
RM or TP. I have been affected
by Labradoodles that have hair
coats and by Goldendoodles, I
have never seen an RM or TP
Doodle with a hair coat except
in pictures.
I am least affected by dogs that
have recently been bathed. Our
neighbors and my sister-in-law
both have Cocker Spaniels that
do affect my allergies but to a
lesser extent if they have
recently been to the groomer.
Albuturol conteracts all these
reactions, so I carry it with me
all the time. And these allergic
reactions only occur when I am
indoors with dogs.
Muskie sleeps on my pillows and
lays in my lap often with NO ill
affect.
Note: The following post
is from Natalie in Chicago.
National Geographic in
their documentary 2003, followed
her puppy's travel from Rutland
Manor in Australia to Chicago
and caught up with her four
months later. Her
allergies were still not being
affected by Lola, her Black ASD
Australian Labradoodle puppy.

Re: Forgot to ask
Sat Aug 9 11:03:11 2003
Hi Joyce,
My allergies did act up for the
first 2 days, but settled down
once we bathed Lola. We had to
bath her twice, and since then I
have been great. The pollen
count here is high so I was
already having problems before
Lola arrived.
The National Geographic episode
is going to air around the
holidays (November/December).
The producer, Kevin, said he
would let me know when the date
is set. I will keep you posted.
They also mentioned they want to
advertise this documentary so be
on the lookout.
I am glad to hear how all the
puppies are doing. We just love
Lola and can't wait to take her
out and show her off. Shouldn't
be to much longer before her
vaccines are complete and we are
counting down the days.

We are so please with the way
the National Geographic segment
turned out. We have Lola's final
kiss goodbye from her Grandma
Beverley to her arrival in
Pittsburgh forever on tape. Lola
enjoyed the show as well. She
was blocking our view and we had
to pull her away from the tv so
we could all watch. It is so
hard to believe how much she has
grown. I can hardly remember her
being so small. I am still
allergy free and can't thank
Beverley enough for sending us
Lola.

Allergies
Thu Jan 20, 2005 16:31
Hi
Kathy,
Both of our children react
to most dogs with both
asthma and hives. We got our
labradoodle (fleece coat) 2
weeks ago and have not had
any reaction to her hair.
They both bury their face in
her and do not react. They
are both reacting to her
saliva though. They get
hives when she licks them.
It has gotten a bit better
over the 2 weeks , but they
are still reacting. After
they wash that area though,
it clears up. We are just so
thankful that they do not
react to her coat. Hives we
can live with, asthma is
another story.
The fleece coat is soooooo
soft!
Good luck,
patti
ALLERGIES CAN BE OTHER
THINGS - (taken from an
email in 2003)
I
am interested in the
video and happy that you
have gotten that project
taken care of. Maybe now you
will have 5 minutes to
yourself. Belu is wonderful
and makes us laugh every
day. We start puppy class
tomorrow and I am really
excited.
Recently she got into some
poison sumac without my
knowledge and you should see
the rash I have gotten.
Every place on my body that
I carry her including my
face is covered. My husband
kept thinking I was allergic
until I came across the
culprit in our backyard. The
oil transferred to her fur
and the rest is history.
Needless to say she got her
second bath. Here is a new
pic for you to see how big
she is getting. Every time I
take the camera out she
poses with a cocked head.
She is starting to look just
like Becky's picture,but
sometimes I see Dude in her
also. Let me know the
details for the video and I
am looking forward to
meeting you in September.
Thank you, Jill
Have allergies, have mild
asthma--cough only--this is
the dog I have always
dreamed of --can bury my
head in his fur...where do
you live?
Find a doodle family in your
area and arrange to meet
them either at a park or a
neutral location. If your
child does not have a
reaction to the dog outside,
invite the doodle-family to
your home or ask if you can
visit at their home. If your
child does well with the
visit, offer to watch the
doodle overnight or over a
long weekend. When I was
researching Labradoodles, I
introduced myself to many
doodle families in my area
and everyone I contacted was
very agreeable to meeting me
at a park, letting me come
to their home, or visiting
my home.
Both my children suffer
asthma, as do I. I have
always owned doodle breeds (cockapoos
throughout my childhood and
recently, two RM doodles). I
think an RM doodle is a
perfect choice.
Good Luck.

Hello
Elizabeth,
My son Gijs is now 7 years
old, has astma (mild),
tested positive for cats (he
can not be near them for a
few minutes) and tested in a
very mild form positive for
dogs. We have tested him
when he was five, he has
dogs since his birth around
him. We currently have a
labrador (Pip)and it goes
fantastic and we are now
waiting for a miniature
labradoodle with a wavy
fleece coat. Our peditrician
was very positive about we
having dogs around him. Very
good for his immunesystem he
said, and he was right he is
almost never sick. Good luck
with your decision making
but when you ask me...GO FOR
IT ! Nina and Gijs from

breeds of dogs and I have a
Labradoodle. He is the most
wonderful thing (except for
my husband of course) that
has ever happened to me. I
think that it is wonderful
that you are trying to find
a hypoallergenic dog for
your child.
Diana
Hi. Our experience with our
doodle has been very
positive to date. My husband
has the kind of allergies to
any animal dander that will
after several weeks or so
give him hives and after
longer exposure will put him
in anaphalaxic (sp) shock.
(He had this happen with 2
dogs he had as a child.) We
have had Charlie (our
doodle) for a year and a
half now and my husband is
doing fine. A little itch
here and there once in a
while for the first few
months, but he would take a
Claritin and be fine. For
the last year or so, he has
not had any itching at all.
Our daughter has been
allergy tested and sounds
like your child. She is
allergic to cats but not
dogs. She also has allergies
and asthma and is on a
regular medication for them.
She has had absolutely no
reaction to our doodle at
all. Our dog sleeps in her
bed almost every night and
she cuddles with him every
chance she gets. Feel free
to e-mail me if you have any
other questions.
grandsons have asthma and or
allergies and we thought
we'd never be able to have a
dog either. I put out the
word here on the Chit Chat
asking if any RM Doodle
owners were in my area and
would they let us meet their
Dood. I got several offers
for that and we spent a
couple hours at a Doodle's
house and my husband hugged
the dog, petted him etc and
after a couple hours and
since, there has been no
reaction. We got our RM girl
in Sept 2006 and she is the
best thing that has happened
to us since having
grandchildren.
So maybe you want to do the
same thing and see if
someone with a Doodle is
near you. It would be funny
if it were me. I live in the
Los Angeles area.
I sure hope this works out
for you.
Cheers, Kate
He has lived with asthma for
most of his life. Growing up
the family had dogs - but
they were kept outside,
which is fair enough. Most
families keep their dogs
outside here in Australia.
Now let me state that my
husband has the type of
asthma that requires
preventatives to be taken
twice a day, along with his
acute attack medication (if
necessary). Therefore, you
can see that it is quite
severe. To top that off, he
has allergies to the
cats/dogs saliva (itchy skin
and breakout in the area
where licked). He used to
have to wash his hands
straight away after touching
animals and just in case he
rubbed his eyes. Sometimes
the itchiness would commence
without there being an open
wound or something similar
on his skin. He also gets
allergic rhinitis (hay
fever).
Now, with our 2 boys, it's
been absolutely amazing. He
doesn't get acute reactions
while breathing around them
with his asthma. He can
play, roll around and even
sleep with them without a
single breathing problem. As
far as licking goes, it's
fine as long as there is no
prior skin irritation or
wound, where they have
licked. He just doesn't get
a reaction just by simple
licking (although he still
is in the habit of washing
hands after playing and
grooming the boys, as is a
good habit for everyone to
get into after touching
their pets).
Now we can have dogs inside
the house and that is where
they sleep. Amazing, isn't
it!! Any bit of their
fleece/wool that has come
off their coat does not
bother him either, even
after gathering with dust in
one corner or something...
Anyway, this is not to say
that your daughter won't
have some sort of a mild
reaction. With all our other
Labradoodle friends that
Trev (my husband) has
encountered and other poodle
crosses (like our Tosca),
Trev does not have a
reaction. This is a good
sign for the RM dogs, as all
these doodles have different
parents.
All I can say is this: I can
understand that these
allergists and
paediatricians are experts,
but have they seen a child
interact with a genuine ASD
Labradoodle. I guess not.
The best thing to do is to
find an RM owner and have
your daughter interact with
him/her for a while. Trev
usually knows within a few
moments after totally
touching the dog if he is
going to get a reaction or
not.
Hope this helps. These
doodles are the best thing,
if you don't want to own a
Poodle. Trev adores the boys
and he is very grateful that
he can now finally own a dog
and not have to worry about
getting ill.
Good luck.
